| Search by |
| The index records can be searched by surname, forename and year
range (of grant of probate).
|
| Standardised surnames |
| Surnames have been 'standardised' so that variants are treated as a single
surname. eg. Abbett, Abbot, Abbott or Griffis, Griffith, Griffits, Griffiths. You can search on any of the variants, but the name in the index records may be presented as, eg. ABBOTT (ABBETT, ABBOT), or GRIFFITHS (GRIFFIS, GRIFFITH, GRIFFITS). Unfortunately, the index records do not tell you which of these spelling was used in the original document. |
| Alias names |
|
If an alias last name is given (see example below), both names will be included in the database and the record may be found by searching either name.
ADDISON, William (ALDERSON alias), St Botolph Aldersgate, merchant tailor, Feb 1704 |
| Choosing the year range |
| The Year in these records is the year of probate (when the will was
legally validated) which may have been several years after an actual death. If
you have a date of death set the year range to include several years after
the year of death.
