| Search by surname, forename, and year.
This will return a list showing the Subject Surname, Forename & Year (from the Subject Box). Clicking the "view image" button alongside an entry will retrieve and display the relevant Family Sheet. Clicking the "display all names" button will display all the names on that Family Sheet, showing surname, forename and a year (usually); because some entries have more than one date, the year here will typically the latest when the person was alive - but it could be year of marriage, year of baptism, or year of death, depending on the information present in the sheet. You can also enter a Sheet Number to access a sheet directly. References to other sheets frequently appear on the Family Sheets. |
| The images |
|
The Inhabitants of London images were scanned from a microfilm version of the original documents, and the microfilming was a little idiosyncratic. The image formats are somewhat varied: many show a single page per image, but most are two pages (verso of one page and recto of another); the reduction ratio of the film jumps about a little, so some images are quite a bit smaller than others; you will also quite often see signs of the microfilm camera operator's fingers. However none of this affect the legibility of the vast majority of images, and should not be a problem. (Some of the microfilmed images required rotation - 90 degrees left or right - but these should all have been corrected in the digitised version – our apologies if we have missed any; please let us know.) The Family Units images were scanned from the original documents and should all be of excellent quality.
Viewing the images If you use Internet Explorer and have downloaded the AlternaTIFF viewer, the images will display automatically within your browser, and you will be able to zoom in to view the image details. Otherwise you can view the images with most image viewers, including Kodak's Imaging for Windows®, which is provided with Microsoft Windows. Click here for help viewing images and maps |
| "notes" button |
| If there are notes relating to the Family Sheet on the facing page of the original but which are not visible on the image (ie because the image does not include the facing page), a "notes" button will appear at the foot of the image page allowing you to view the image containing the notes.

| "Search by Sheet" button |
| The image display page has a "Search by Sheet" button, allowing you to enter a Sheet Number and view that sheet. This is particularly useful when – as is often the case – references to another sheet appear on the one you are currently displaying.
