Viewing images on a PC using Windows
Download AlternaTIFF free plug-in for Windows:
  1. Go to www.alternatiff.com and follow the download instructions.
Internet Explorer users are advised to select download options 1 or 2.
Netscape users select download option 3.
AlternaTIFF is free but you may need to register for the plug-in to work. If Company Name is not applicable enter n/a.

  2. Once installation is complete, close all browser windows and re-start the browser.

  3. To check AlternaTIFF plugin has installed correctly see AlternaTIFF test page which also has the links to all known issues.

  4. If you have trouble getting AlternaTIFF to work please read the AlternaTIFF FAQ.

XP Users
To install Alternatiff ActiveX Control, please go to www.alternatiff.com and click on the 'Click here to go to installation' page.
On the next page you will be asked to 'Click here to download/install'.
XP users will have to register Alternatiff and to do this, click on the link towards at the bottom of the page which states:
'Tiff viewer not registered. Click here to register' You will then be prompted by a pop up screen where you will need to choose the 'automatic' registration option and send your details.
You should then be able to see the message stating: 'The Alternatiff ActiveX control is installed'.

Netscape 6 tip
If the image loads but does not display (the toolbar is present, but no image) try turning on AlternaTIFF's Create Temporary Files.
Right-click in the frame, select More Settings and then Create Temporary Files. Once this is ticked you should find the image will display next time you reload the page.

Internet Explorer tip
IE5+ may have a TIFF plug-in (Kodak Imaging) as part of the browser, however, we recommend installing AlternaTIFF plug-in, as it is easier to use and has a larger viewing area with fewer unnecessary toolbars. IE6 users will need to download a plug-in such as AlternaTIFF to view these images.

Viewing images on a Mac
Images will probably automatically load in Apple's QuickTime plug-in, which unfortunately does not allow zooming or printing.

We have found an image editing program - GraphicConverter - (similar to PhotoShop). GraphicConverter costs US$30, though we understand that it was bundled by Apple with the PoewerMac G5 and the Aluminium PowerBook G4.

If you have problems running GraphicConverter with the Safari browser, we recommend that you use the FireFox browser instead. You can download the latest version of FireFox for Mac OS X at www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html.

An alternative is to download & install the Mac plug-in Accel ViewTIFF plug-in from Acordex. This plug-in works well but can only be used free of charge for 15 days. After that you will have to pay $49 US to continue using the plug-in.

Download & setup GraphicConverter
  • Go to www.lemkesoft.com/en/index.htm.

  • Depending on which Mac version you have there is a choice of GraphicConverter versions to download. For example, we have an iMac and selected the GraphicConverter Classic for MacOS 8 up to 9.2.2 (4.4.4) to download. This version is 4.8 MB in size.

  • You will need StuffIt Expander 6.0 (5.5 for 68k Macs) or later to decompress the downloaded file. Download StuffIt Expander for free from www.stuffit.com/expander/download.html if you don't already have it.

  • Find the file named 'GraphicConverterVersion.img' with this icon and double-click it.
This will create an installer disk icon Double-click it to display the Folder icon.
Double-click the Folder icon to display the Program icon

  • Double-click the GraphicConverter program icon.
The first time you open the program the following 2 boxes will be diplayed.
Click the Update Now button on the box below.

On the following box, shown below, click Overwrite.
  • Quit GraphicConverter to save these settings.

  • Open your browser (the following instructions are for IE5 so some details may vary depending on your browser version).
From the Edit menu select Preferences.
On the File Helper Settings list, shown below, scroll down and click to highlight the Description: TIFF picture   Extension: .tiff.
    Click the Change button.
  • In the Edit File Helper box, shown below, set the Download destination option to Download Folder and the Handling option to View with Application.
Ensure the application shown is GraphicConverter, if not click the Browse... button and find the GraphicConverter program. Click OK to save these settings.

  • Now Quit the browser application.
Restart it with these new settings.
The image, and all other census images, should automatically be opened in GraphicConverter, which allows printing, zooming and other useful features.

  • Click the Try it button on GraphicConverter to start the program.
The first time a census image is opened the following box will be displayed.
Click Always change to allow GraphicConverter to open these images.
To save or print an image from GraphicConverter from the File menu find the Print and Save functions.
To zoom in and out either select the Zoom options from the Picture menu or use the Zoom tool . With the tool selected click the image to zoom in. To zoom out hold down the alt key and click the image.
