Anyone who has been researching ancestors for ten years or more remembers the street indexes for the census returns of England and Wales. They were created for communities of more than 40,000 and, if you had an address, were real time savers when searching for people in censuses.
The National Archives (TNA) has more than 300 volumes of street indexes for the 1841 to 1891 census returns and they are now making the information available as a special project at Your Archives, TNA's wiki. Your Archives exists to help users find out more about historical records, both at TNA and at other repositories...
Mr Tuke’s Fund for Assisted Emigration 1882-85
The unusual name, Tuke, and the subject, Irish assisted emigration, caught my attention. I quickly learned from Wkipedia that James Tuke was a Quaker
philanthropist, born in York, England, who had been working for change since the Great Famine nearly 40 years before. This perspective ought to be interesting.
The Parish Register 1910
Parish registers are fascinating, not only because of the family facts we find but because they reveal so much more about local life. I am hoping this book will help me take greater interest and more care when reading registers.
Sim’s Manual for the Topographer and Genealogist 1856
More than 150 years ago what advice was there for the genealogist and how does it compare to the advice I read and share in lectures and courses today? This selection is for fun but I may find useful research tips too.
