A very rare and extremely useful specialist directory of Southampton and surrounding district of 1853 by Williams. This is one of the books that has been loaned to the Archive CD Books Project by the Family Records Centre (the PRO) in London.

White's Directory - Hampshire 1859 White's Directory

White's directories are extremely comprehensive and useful for the period, and this one with 664 pages is no exception. Published in 1859, with 664 pages plus preface pages. A large volume with tens of thousands of names, addresses, trades & occupations, and a comprehensive description of every place in the county and and its history. A tremendous primary source of information and data for family history research and history of all towns & villages for the whole county and including the Isle of Wight. Lists of people and their addresses and trades and occupations for the whole county. Not just shops and businesses, but lots of ordinary people such as dress makers, carpenters, farmers, teachers, etc. Add to this the information on schools, banks, travel, postal services, goods carriage, churches , etc. for every place and you have a total picture of the whole county in 1859. Once a very sad book, literally falling apart, but Archive CD Books had it beautifully renovated to the highest traditional standards in half leather, with real gold leaf lettering, and beautiful hand made mottled paper covered boards. They don't come much more beautiful than this!
