Calendar of Assize Records: Kent Indictments
Author: J.S. Cockburn
Published:
1997
Medium: Book
Publisher:
Boydell & Brewer Ltd
Seventeenth-century Kent indictments have survived in larger numbers then have those of any other county, and they therefore provide a particularly full picture of the adminstration of criminal justice, the organisation of the assizes, the role of the judges and officials, and the whole process of criminal trial. This volume contains a full calendar of all the material relating to Kent from 1625 to 1688 which exists among the assize indictment files for the Home Circuit. The calendar also includes judges' commissions; writs and precepts; lists of local officials; coroners' inquests; and appeals of felony. This volume is the last in a series of four, all edited by Professor J.S. Cockburn, with earlier titles covering Kent from 1625-1675; they are available upon enquiry from HMSO. Professor J.S. COCKBURN teaches in the History Department at the University of Maryland. hardback ISBN 978-0-851-15709-2

Early Modern Kent 1540-1640
Author: Michael Zell
Published:
2000
Medium: Book
Publisher:
Boydell & Brewer Ltd
An immensely useful volume. HISTORY Kent was at the heart of the nation's history during the period of the Reformation, the reign of Queen Elizabeth I and the decades leading up to the English Civil Wars. This specially commissioned new history offers an accessible but scholarly introduction to the county's history during a century of extraordinary developments. It covers the county's evolution from Henry VIII to Charles I, addressing local political, economic and industrial change in the context of the larger national picture, and highlighting the striking diversity of the county's farming systems and landscapes, both urban and rural. The progress of the Protestant Reformation and its wider consequences for the common people as well as the gentry of Kent are studied in depth. There is also a challenging new interpretation of the origins and growth of political differences among the governors of Kent, which led ultimately to the civil strife of the 1640s. Finally, there is a detailed look at witchcraft and witch-hunting in Kent between the reign of Elizabethan and the Civil War period. MICHAEL ZELL is lecturer in history at the University of Greenwich. Contributors: PATRICIA HYDE, MICHAEL L. ZELL, JOAN THIRSK, JANE ANDREWES, JACQUELINE BOWER, MALCOLM J. GASKILL, JACQUELINE EALES. hardback ISBN 978-0-851-15585-2

The cathedrals at Rochester and Canterbury, founded in the early 7th century, are the two oldest ecclesiastical buildings with a continuous history in Britain, but Rochester cathedral is comparatively unknown, and research on itshistory limited. Kent in the Twentieth Century
Author: Nigel Yates
Published:
2001
Medium: Book
Publisher:
Boydell & Brewer Ltd
The sixth volume to be published in the major ten-volume new history of the county of Kent, and the first detailed study of the development of Kent over the past hundred years. Each of the ten chapters begins by evoking a picture of Kent on the eve of the First World War and looking at the changes that have taken place between then and the present day in the area under discussion. Particular attention is paid to the impact of the two World Wars on Kent; to the influence of national events on local institutions and people; to the role of the county council in the development of many aspects of life in Kent; and to the major economic and social changes of the last thirty years, many of them associated with Britain's entry into the European economic community and Kent's strategic importance as a corridor linking London and Britain to Europe. NIGEL YATES is senior research fellow in church history, University of Wales, Lampeter. hardback ISBN 978-0-851-15587-6

However, they have never before been edited or published in full, and their publication as a complete set of documents provides a valuable resource for scholarship. This volume contains the acts of convocation during the reigns of Richard II and Henry IV, extensively reconstructed from the archbishops' registers [which are in disorder for much of this period] and other sources. The texts enable us to chart the evolution of the convocations to the point where they became virtually synonymous with provincial councils, and show how they dealt with the challenge posed by John Wycliffe and the early Lollards. hardback ISBN 978-1-843-83179-2

Author: Nigel Yates

The studies in this volume illuminate the changes in society over nearly three centuries. They consider the related fields of the church and its work in the parish, the expansion of educational provision (including the involvementof national societies such as the SPCK) and the operation of the old and new Poor Law, together with medical aspects of Poor Law provision. A separate study is made of the impact of epidemics which led ultimately to improvements in public sanitation and water supply. A wealth of local detail accompanies the narrative, citing life in towns and villages throughout the county, and recording the critical shift during the period in question from church-centredaltruism to early imtimations of the welfare state. hardback ISBN 978-0-851-15556-2

The Archaeology of Kent to AD 800
Author: John Williams
Published:
2007
Medium: Book
Publisher:
Boydell & Brewer Ltd
Kent's proximity to the European mainland has meant that it has always had a special relationship with its continental neighbours. At times this has been a positive force, with Kent a conduit for trade and new ideas, but on other occasions the white cliffs of Dover have symbolised defiance, with Kent being in the front line in the defence of England. The result has been an extremely rich archaeological heritage from Palaeolithic times onwards. The openingup of the Channel Tunnel and the construction of the associated high-speed railway line linking England and France, together with major development activity associated with an agenda for regeneration and economic growth, has resulted in unprecedented archaeological activity which has revolutionised our understanding of Kent's earlier past. The contributors to this volume, all of whom have specialist research interests in Kent, have combined established wisdom with the fresh information from recent work to create a new and exciting story. Contributors: TIMOTHY CHAMPION, MARTIN MILLETT, MARTIN WELCH AND FRANCIS WENBAN-SMITH. hardback ISBN 978-0-851-15580-7

The Economy of Kent, 1640-1914
Author: Alan Armstrong
Published:
1996
Medium: Book
Publisher:
Boydell & Brewer Ltd
In recent years, historians' interpretations of the economic history of Britain from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century have changed significantly. There is less emphasis on the idea of a cataclysmic `industrial revolution'pioneered in and confined to the northern and midland counties, with increasing amounts of attention devoted to the long-neglected economic history of the southern counties. The Economy of Kent, 1640-1914is the first authoritative survey of the topic. Subjectsconsidered include the population of Kent, its growth, mobility and distribution; agriculture; industry; transport; labour; and the importance of the sea to Kent. Its findings suggest that Kent retained its place as an important constituent of the expanding British economy throughout the period, and that, by its steady economic progress, it avoided many of the strains and stresses experienced by counties more directlytouched by industrialisation, along with the painful processes of readjustment that other regions have faced more recently. ALAN ARMSTRONG is Professor of Economic and Social History at Kent University. The contributors are: MARY DOBSON, ALAN ARMSTRONG, GORDON MINGAY, DAVID ORMROD, JAMES PRESTON, THEO BARKER, ROBIN CRAIG, JOHN WHYMAN, CHRISTOPHER CHALKLIN, TOM RICHARDSON, ALAN ARMSTRONG hardback ISBN 978-0-851-15582-1

The Register of John Morton, Archbishop of Canterbury 1486-1500: III
Author: Christopher Harper-Bill
Published:
2000
Medium: Book
Publisher:
Boydell & Brewer Ltd
This volume, which completes the edition of Cardinal Morton's register, deals exclusively with the administration of the diocese of Norwich during the vacancy of 1499, and represents one of the most complete records of the governance of any English diocese over a short period. The original Latin text is here presented in the form of a full English calendar; the contents include a detailed financial account, 140 wills presented for probate, judgements in the consistory court at Norwich and the record of a visitation of the parishes of Suffolk. The wills provide valuable insights into the religious motivation of East Anglians at the end of the middle ages, while the visitation returns and court judgements reveal much about the conduct of clergy and laity. This is thus a valuable source not only for the religious and social history of late medieval East Anglia, but also for the condition of the church in England thirty years before the Henrician Reformation. hardback ISBN 978-0-907-23955-0
