Medical Education at St Bartholomew's Hospital, 1123-1995
Author:  Keir Waddington
Published:  2003
Medium: Book         Publisher:  Boydell & Brewer Ltd
Medical Education at St Bartholomew's Hospital traces the evolution of medical education at Barts from its foundation in 1123 to the college's merger with The London and Queen Mary & Westfield College in 1995. Drawing on the hospital's rich archives, it investigates how training was institutionalised and organised at Barts to explore the shifting nature of medical education between the eighteenth and late-twentieth century. Medical Educationat St Bartholomew's Hospital, in analysing the history of the medical college at Barts, explores the relationship between clinical study, science and the institution to look at the rise of the hospital student, the growth oflaboratory medicine, and the evolution of a research culture. It places the changing nature of training at Barts in the context of metropolitan and national developments to analyse the structure of medical training, the Universityof London and its impact on medical education, and the experiences of the students and staff. Questions are asked about how academic medicine developed and about the relationship between training, the bedside, teaching hospitalsand the politics of healthcare and higher education. In looking at these areas, existing notions of the 'development' of medical education are problematised to provide a study that explores the nature of medical education at Bartsand in London.

The Companion Guide to London [new edn]
Author:  David Piper
Published:  2000
Medium: Book         Publisher:  Boydell & Brewer Ltd
It is surely remarkable to write of a guidebook that it is difficult to put down. But it is certainly true of this one. ECONOMIST

Calls our attention to everything beautiful, historic or curious left in the heart of London. SUNDAY TIMES

David Piper's classic book is the most elegant, lyrical and stimulating of all guides to London, written with undisguised enthusiasm, intimacy and affection. It traverses London from Regent's Park to Lambeth, from the Tower of London to Kensington, with excursions on the river and forays to outlying points of interest, each chapter covering an area which can be comfortably walked in a day. The author draws out the individual characterof each district through history, literature, art and architecture and his own informed and entertaining comments. This is an essential guide for those who really want to understand how London has developed; it has been thoroughly revised and updated for this new edition.
DAVID PIPER was an art historian, director of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, from 1973-1985, and before that director of the National Portrait Gallery, London.
FIONNUALA JERVIS, who revised the guide, has edited and contributed to numerous historical and art historical publications, and in the course of this revision has walked every step of the way in David Piper's footprints from her home in Kensington.   paperback   ISBN 978-1-900-63936-1

The Politics of Stability
Author:  Frank Freeman Foster
Published:  1977
Medium: Book         Publisher:  Boydell & Brewer Ltd
By the fifteenth century, although ultimate authority over London rested in the crown's hands, the City's autonomy was no longer in dispute. The aldermen were the true rulers in London, and they further strengthened their hold on civic government. What had seemed an emerging democracy in the mid-fourteenth century was modified and reassembled around what proved to be the stabilizing influence of an elitist merchant oligarchy.   hardback   ISBN 978-0-901-05031-1

Medium: CD         Publisher:  Archive CD Books
Transcripts of the original registers. Baptisms, burials and marriages 1563-1700. The transcribers were extremely meticulous in recording the entries . Most events have extra information, such as a deceased person's cause of death and their father's name or, at a baptism, the father's name and occupation is almost always there too. The book is incredibly well indexed, alphabetically by name and there is also an index of trades, professions and 'miscellaneous matters' such as causes of death (one of which is, bizarrely, 'killed by a fall of a barrel of raisins'!) The University of London, 1858-1900
Author:  F.M.G. Willson
Published:  2004
Medium: Book         Publisher:  Boydell & Brewer Ltd
In 1858 the University - in reality an examining board - opened its non-medical examinations to candidates irrespective of how they prepared themselves. At the same time, graduates could join the newly established Convocation, forfour decades empowered to veto changes in the University's Charter, choose a quarter of the governing body the Senate, and, from 1868, elect the University's MP. This book analyses the delicate and often stressful relations of Senate and Convocation, covering the long struggle over admission of women to degrees; the contribution of the University to secondary education; the establishment of the University's seat in the House of Commons, and the subsequentelections of Members. Later chapters describe the extended campaign to change the institution into an orthodox university, and the political struggles and academic manoeuvring that attended the process. F.M.G. WILLSON has retired from an academic and administrative career in Zimbabwe, North America, London and Australia.   hardback   ISBN 978-1-843-83065-8

Wardens' Accounts and Court Minute Books of the Goldsmiths' Mistery of London, 1334-1446
Author:  Lisa Jefferson
Published:  2003
Medium: Book         Publisher:  Boydell & Brewer Ltd
The goldsmiths of London had formed an organised guild, or mistery (in the medieval sense of 'craft' or 'profession') by the twelfth century. Granted their first royal charter in 1327 by Edward III, they are one of the twelve great livery companies, and still oversee the work of goldsmiths, silversmiths and jewellers. Published here for the first time are their two earliest record books, presented in the original languages, French (Anglo-Norman), English and Latin, with a facing-page translation into modern English. From these full records valuable and lively detail emerges: the working practices of gold and silversmiths, the financial accounts of the wardens, apprentices admitted, participation in civic events such as pageants, and records of offences (both professional and personal) brought before the disciplinary court. The edition is accompanied by a full introduction, a bibliography, a subject index and a complete name index.
