Civil War, Interregnum and Restoration in Gloucestershire, 1640-1672
Author:  A.R. Warmington
Published:  1997
Medium: Book         Publisher:  Boydell & Brewer Ltd

Recent studies of particular areas during the Civil War have shown how kinship and social and educational ties, far from reinforcing county isolationism, frequently drew inhabitants into a far wider network and divided existing loyalties. Following this approach, Dr Warmington's examination of the history of Gloucestershire during the period begins with the descent into war between 1640 and 1642, showing how the two sides formed and why the Parliamentarians had the more durable war machine.   hardback   ISBN 978-0-861-93236-8

Author:  John Coffey

John Goodwin [1594-1665] was one of the most prolific and controversial writers of the English Revolution; his career illustrates some of the most important intellectual developments of the seventeenth century. Educated at Queens' College, Cambridge, he became vicar of a flagship Puritan parish in the City of London. During the 1640s, he wrote in defence of the civil war, the army revolt, Pride's Purge, and the regicide, only to turn against Cromwell in 1657.   hardback   ISBN 978-1-843-83265-2

John Lambert, Parliamentary Soldier and Cromwellian Major-General, 1619-1684
Author:  David Farr
Published:  2003
Medium: Book         Publisher:  Boydell & Brewer Ltd

John Lambert's life and career have long deserved this revealing study. The man who made Cromwell Lord Protector in 1653 also stopped him becoming king in 1657; and Lambert was the originator of the Instrument of Government, on which Cromwell's Protectorate was based. Committed to his deeply held, radical beliefs, Lambert first rose to prominence as a dashing cavalry commander in the civil wars of 1642-51, and he was a prominent upholder of the power of the New Model Army, particularly in his creation of the Major Generals, who ruled England in 1655.   hardback   ISBN 978-1-843-83004-7

Lord Broghill and the Cromwellian Union with Ireland and Scotland
Author:  Patrick Little
Published:  2004
Medium: Book         Publisher:  Boydell & Brewer Ltd

Broghill's years of political influence included a distinctive initiative in Ireland in the early 1650s calling for limits on army power, religious radicalism, and urging closer ties with England; domestic reforms and keen promotion of the Cromwellian regime in Scotland, of which he was president during 1655-6; and in 1656-7 the introduction of the Humble Petition and Advice, which sought to re-establish a civilian state, with Oliver Cromwell as king. Cromwell's refusal of the crown marked the beginning of the end of Broghill's political aspirations, and here these years of influence are seen in the context of the rest of his life, especially his early years as understudy of his father, the 1st earl of Cork, and his later life, as earl of Orrery. A thematic section deals with Broghill's private motives: the importance of his extended family, his financial situation, and, above all, his deep religious beliefs.

Puritan Iconoclasm during the English Civil War
Author:  Julie Spraggon
Published:  2003
Medium: Book         Publisher:  Boydell & Brewer Ltd

This work offers a detailed analysis of Puritan iconoclasm in England during the 1640s, looking at the reasons for the resurgence of image-breaking a hundred years after the break with Rome, and the extent of the phenomenon. Initially a reaction to the emphasis on ceremony and the 'beauty of holiness' under Archbishop Laud, the attack on 'innovations', such as communion rails, images and stained glass windows, developed into a major campaign driven forward by the Long Parliament as part of its religious reformation.   hardback   ISBN 978-0-851-15895-2

Suffolk Committees for Scandalous Ministers 1644-46
Author:  Clive Holmes
Published:  1970
Medium: Book         Publisher:  Boydell & Brewer Ltd

In the 1640s Parliament intervened against clergymen with Royalist sympathies, and in the political jargon of the time they were referred to as 'Scandalous Ministers'. As the Civil War developed two Suffolk committees were empowered to hear evidence against any minister (or schoolmaster) who was 'scandalous' in either life or doctrine, or in any way 'malignant' (ill-affected to Parliament). This volume shows how the national split was mirrored in a Suffolk village with questions of allegiance being posed at parish level. The records in this book are, for the most part, the charges bought by Suffolk parishioners, and provide an account of popular religious beliefs. Perhaps most valuable are the splendid cameos of rural life; of the constables of Blyford undertaking a midnight raid on an unlicenced alehouse to impress soldiers; of the Christmas celebrations at Little Cornard; of Nicholas Stoneham watching a Sunday football match at Eyke.   hardback   ISBN 978-0-900-71600-3

A most unusual book. During the English Civil War, Presbyterian ministers and church councils were established in London's churches. These people had to be proposed and vetted. This book contains transcripts of the proposals for the new ministers and church councils of each of those churches. Fascinating stuff for the historian of the English Civil War.
