Language, Print and Electoral Politics, 1790-1832
Author:
Hannah Barker
Published:
2001
Medium: Book
Publisher:
Boydell & Brewer Ltd
In the half century before 1790, there had been only one contested election in Newcastle, but between 1790 and 1832 there were a dozen. This new and heated political climate prompted the production of a vast array of printed propaganda and political commentary, aimed at voters and non-voters alike. Most of this material took the form of single printed sheets, or broadsides, produced in great numbers and distributed amongst the town's inhabitants for free. This volume reproduces just over three hundred Newcastle broadsides published during this time; they constitute an important and unique collection, for though such material was produced in many constituencies in Hanoverian England, rarely has it survived in such a complete form. Material comes from Keele University Library, the Sutherland papers at the Staffordshire Record Office, and Newcastle Museum. A representative selection of reproductions of original broadsides is included to give the reader an idea of how contemporaries would have seen the texts and an introduction explains their context. Dr HANNAH BARKER is Lecturer in History at the University of Manchester; Dr DAVID VINCENT is Professor of Social History at the University of Keele.

North-East England, 1569-1625: Governance, Culture and Identity
Author:
Diana Newton
Published:
2006
Medium: Book
Publisher:
Boydell & Brewer Ltd
This study of England's north-eastern parts examines counties Durham and Northumberland as well as Newcastle-upon-Tyne, with its central theme the extent to which the county gentry and urban elites possessed a sense of regional identity. It concentrates on these elites' social, political, religious and cultural connections which extended beyond the purely administrative jurisdictions of the county or town. By concentrating on a series of seismic changes in the area - the demise of its great regional magnates, the rapid upsurge of the coal industry and the union of the crowns - it offers a distinctive chronological coverage, from the latter half of the sixteenth century through to the early seventeenth century. Old stereotypes of the north-eastern landed elites as isolated and backward are overturned while their response to state formation reveals their political sophistication. Traditional views of the religious conservatism of the north-eastern parts are reassessed to demonstrate its multi-faceted complexion. And contrasting cultural patterns are analysed, through ballad literature, the cult of St Cuthbert and increasing exposure to metropolitan 'civility', to reveal a series of sub-regions within the north-eastern reaches of the kingdom. Dr DIANA NEWTON is Lecturer in History at the University of Teesside.

Northumberland 1879 Post Office Directory
Published:
1879
Medium: CD
Publisher:
Archive CD Books
By 1879, the Post Office (Kelly's) directories were becoming even more comprehensive. This one has three main sections. A County Directory (places, with details of churches, facilities, etc., and all people in each place having trades), a Court Directory (private residents, but not all households in the country areas), and also a Classified Trades Directory covering the whole county. Rather like a yellow pages.
The Newcastle section is especially comprehensive, and has a street directory with house numbers (every house!) and names of each householder. It is really easy to locate where you are on a street, as road intersections are noted, and even the locations of churches, chapels, shops, public houses, etc. There is also a separate Court Directory for Newcastle, with all residents listed in alphabetical order.
The CD is produced in PDF format for viewing using Adobe Acrobat on any computer, and is comprehensively book marked so that you can find your way around easily.

St Cuthbert and the Normans
Author:
William M. Aird
Published:
1998
Medium: Book
Publisher:
Boydell & Brewer Ltd
North-east England experienced the Norman Conquest rather differently from the south of the country. This account of events in Northumbria gives an important alternative view of the Conquest and settlement, distinct from the more usual southern and court-centred evidence. A key factor in events was the monastic community of St Cuthbert in Durham, which had survived the political upheavals following the collapse of the Northumbrian kingdom under Scandinavian pressure in the ninth century. Its position thus strengthened, it occupied an influential place in the factors ranged against the Normans, who recognised in the community a powerful force for resistance. The history of the community during the Anglo-Norman period is closely examined, particularly the relationship between the new Norman bishops and the monastic cathedral chapter and their respective rights and privileges. From this detailed study, Dr Aird argues that conquest, in the north-east at least, took a different, less traumatic form from that generally assumed from the early twelfth-century description of the reformation of the church in 1083. Throughout this account of events in Durham in the years following the conquest, Dr Aird is careful also to give due emphasis to relations with the Scots kings of the later eleventh and twelfth centuries, and to the distinctive nature of medieval Northumbria and the Haliwerfolc in particular, that region subject to the bishops of the Church. Dr WILLIAM M. AIRD lectures in the School of History and Archaeology at Cardiff University.
