North Nottinghamshire Original Register of Voters for the Year 1885

The register of persons entitled to vote at any election of a member to serve for the Northern division of the County of Nottingham, commencing 1885. There are 8936 electors listed in the register. Includes the persons full name, residential address and the reason they qualify to vote i.e. freehold land, freehold factory etc Interestingly it lists the number of properties each person owns and sometimes states what the buildings purpose was, e.g. free hold house and shop, bleach works as occupier. A superb F. White's Directory with a detailed description and history of every place in the county of Nottinghamshire. Each of the larger places has a list of the streets in the town (not a street directory which names the occupants of each house) and a list of private individuals who could not be assigned a 'trade' plus a trade directory which lists all of the bakers, brewers and butchers etc in that place. Detailed description and history of Nottinghamshire, and the state of each settlement in 1738. This book was one of a series which covered the whole of Britain. Nottinghamshire Marriage Licences (Vol. 1) 1577-1754

Abstracts of licences for: ARCHDEACONRY COURT 1577-1700 PECULIAR OF SOUTHWELL 1588-1754 Licences give a lot of useful information to genealogists, as even the early ones will state details such as the place of residence of the couple, their parents or guardians, their ages, and so on. Old and New Nottingham, 1853.

A wonderful history book covering all aspects of life in old Nottingham. A great way to see how the town has grown and changed over the years. This book discusses Nottingham's history from its foundation to 1853, when the book was published. Unusually it contains not only the history of Nottingham's institutions, amenities and landmarks but also its social and cultural history, including chapters on Nottingham's poetry, old customs, recreations, social and sanitary state, music and musicians. Full of tales and rich in detail this book brings Old Nottingham to life. From the "Impostors and Eccentric Characters" chapter, "Jockey John died in St. Mary's workhouse in December 1797. This pauper had resided in the house a considerable time, and had always been regarded as a male and the father of a family, several illegitimate children having been sworn to him. On being laid out the body was discovered to be that of a woman. She had formerly been a groom in the service of Sir Harry Harper and figured on the turf under the cognomen of "Jockey John". "

Register of Persons Entitled to Vote

Borough of Nottingham Book 1 - 1846 Book 2 - 1848-49 Book 3 - 1849-50 Unlike the normal "Poll Books", which were a record of those actually voting, these books contain the names and addresses of all persons entitled to vote in the election for a Member of Parliament. To be entitled to vote in the elections, a person must have owned a house or some land. These books state the names of the people, their place of abode, the nature of their qualification to vote, and the place where their property is situated. (The 1846 book is just a list of names and addresses of Freemen entitled to vote).

Royal Charters of the Borough of Nottingham

Scanned in fine resolution and reproduced on CD, this book was originally published in 1884, and contains the text of the Royal Charters of the Borough of Nottingham from 1155 to 1712. The book has a transcript of the original Latin text plus a translation into English, and Archive CD Books' CD also contains a facsimile of the 1155 Charter, and has pictures of many of the Seals of the Borough and Mayor's Seals for the period up to 1880. The Royal Charters form the basis for the laws of the town, some of which are still applicable; and its rights, including those of holding markets and fairs, etc.

The Gentleman's Magazine Library 1731-1868, Nottinghamshire, Oxfordshire & Rutland

The original Gentleman's Magazine contained articles on a vast array of subjects, including lots of wonderful topographical pieces. In 1891 George Gomme republished all of these topograhical articles but edited and indexed them into county specific order. Each of Gomme's works contains between two and four separate counties, except for the London volumes. An absolute goldmine of information about the county, its people and its places. The History & Directory of the Town of Nottingham

"An alphabetical listing of the inhabitants, classification of the professions and trades, a complete register of electors, a brief description of its present state, population, trade, county and poor rates, institutions, public buildings, etc." This is a most unusual directory for this early period, in that it lists the residents, (rather than just the people with trades). It even includes the framework knitters. Furthermore it states whether they are freemen, freeholders, occupiers (of houses), or journeymen (people who have completed their apprenticeship), together with their addresses.
