Shropshire 1828-9 Pigot's Directory (with map)

A very early and rare directory which covers the market towns and principal villages of the county (Please note that smaller villages and hamlets are not included). The descriptions of each place are excellent with details about schools, hospitals, churches and other institutions plus detailed histories and directories of the nobility, gentry, clergy and classified directories of trades people. Also included is an excellent county map. Shropshire 1863 Post Office Directory

By this date the Post Office Directories, published by Kelly's, were becoming much more comprehensive. Each town and village in the county was surveyed and the history and details of the faclities was published along with lists of private residents and commercial traders. Also included is a Court directory of private individuals and a classified trades directory. The book was kindly loaned to the Archive CD Books Project by The Family Record Centre (The PRO) in London as part of their ongoing project to digitise *all* of their directories in order to make them more accessible and ease the pressure on these old and rare books.

The Gentleman's Magazine Library 1731-1868, Shropshire and Somersetshire

The original Gentleman's Magazine contained articles on a vast array of subjects, including lots of wonderful topographical pieces. In 1891 George Gomme republished all of these topograhical articles but edited and indexed them into county specific order. Each of Gomme's works contains between two and four separate counties, except for the London volumes. An absolute goldmine of information about the county, its people and its places. Westbury Parish Registers 1638-1812

Transcripts from the original registers of baptisms, marriages and burials. The wonderful thing about this type of resource is that the names of relatives are sometimes given too. A burial of, say, John Smith in 1695 might also state that he was 'the son of Thomas'. You might also find your ancestors from elsewhere in the county (or from even further a-field) marrying by licence in this parish. There can be several reasons for this type of marriage, maybe the parents did not approve or perhaps there was another good reason to marry quickly and quietly!
